Ralph Whitten: We fed Ultra to 16 of our 75 dogs this year. In my trial, I had 8 comparisons of littermates where one littermate was on Ultra and the other on my standard diet of Power Pack plus Champaine Blue Race Diet (frozen meat comprising Beef, chicken, liver and egg). The Ultra worked very well: the dogs maintained weight even better than those on a Power Pack plus Champaine Blue Diet and there was no detectable difference in performance between the two diets. We fed the Ultra twice a day (1/3 of the total ration in the morning as baited water and 2/3 in the evening also with warm water, dishing it out immediately after adding the water.) I chose to feed it with water to make sure that the dogs were well hydrated and to avoid a second trip through the kennel with water (that would soon turn to ice anyway.) The twice a day feeding worked well: no loose stools or other issues. On average these dogs were consuming 1.25 pounds of Ultra each day, though some dogs got as little as 0.5 pounds per day and others as much as 2 pounds per day. From my experience with dogs running up to 30 miles per day and 200 miles per week at up to 20+ mph, I can conclude and recommend the following: - Ultra is an excellent replacement for meat supplements with no loss of performance and no need for additional caloric supplements;- Ultra works well for the standard practice of twice a day feedings (baited water in the morning and main meal in the evening);- Ultra can be fed with water to ensure good hydration.- Since concerns about loss of performance, the need for additional feedings and worries about hydration have kept some mushers from using Ultra, I think that my experience can prove their fears unfounded. |
